Turning Heritage Into Passion: Mestiza NY

In 2014, sorority sisters Louisa Rechter and Alessandra Perez-Rubio took deep breaths, quit their jobs, and dove headfirst into becoming business owners. Anchored on a common love for fashion and an aspiration to celebrate the stylish Filipina, they launched MESTIZA, a clothing line inspired by Philippine and Asian culture.

Drawing inspiration from the Maria Clara and the Cheongsam, MESTIZA is completely manufactured in New York City’s historic garment district. The Filipino influence is evident in the choice of fabric, the simple yet feminine designs, and their company logo, a pineapple.

Though only a year in the game, the brand has made quite an impact in New York, having had several trunk shows, and now retailing in both Florida and Missouri.
